In late 2013, Michael Beach, Adam Camilleri and Peter Warden formed Shovels. It’s a befitting name to accompany the songs that led to their self-titled debut, which received a limited run of 100 copies. One of those tapes made its way to Homeless head honcho Richie Ramone who didn’t waste anytime in releasing the album only a few months later. The album is a hot ride of searing guitar lines that I’m not sure whether to call blues or psych, paired with thundering bass and vicious wild drums. It sounds a bit like what would have happened if feedtime smoked more pot.

They sound like Motorhead by way of Venom P. Stinger, or, maybe it’s more Melvins via Black Sabbath. Black Deity hail from Brisbane, and I’ll let you draw your own comparisons on that. In 2014 they released a debut 7” thru Sydney label Sexy Romance Records, a metaphorically thick slab of pure dank rock. Although the influences are prominent, to dismiss Black Deity as a nostalgia act would be a genuine disservice if I ever heard one.
Check out some of Black Deity’s releases over at their bandcamp.
