Ep 169: Emma Donovan & The Putbacks; NO ZU

Emma Donovan & The Putbacksemma donovan

Engineered by Paul Maybury
Recorded at PBS FM Studios, Melbourne, 27th November 2014.

Emma Donovan grew up singing church songs with her maternal grandparents on the North coast of New South Wales. Her first gigs were singing in The Donovans, a band comprised of her mother and five uncles. With her mother, Emma sang country for years, and in her youth was a fixture at the Tamworth Country Music Festival, but she always yearned for the bluesier tones of her Father’s record collection, full of American artists like Laverne Baker and Etta James and Indigenous Australian artists like No Fixed Address and Archie Roach.

Years later, after touring and recording with many of the mainstays of Indigenous music and developing as a solo artist in her own right, Emma met members of The PutBacks, and finally she found a band with the gritty blues soaked tones she had been looking for. She also found, in PutBacks bassist Mick Meagher, a co-writer and collaborator on the the soul songs she had been waiting a lifetime to write and sing. They recorded and released the record ‘Dawn’ in 2014 to mass critical acclaim and gave birth to a new style, ‘Indigenous Blues’.

NO ZU

nozu

Engineered by Nao Anzai and Myles Mumford
Recorded at PBS FM Studios, Melbourne, 20th April 2016.

Chanted female vocals, pitched down male vocals, wild sax and horns that coalesce into something uniquely antipodean, a bluestone back-alley hallucination that NO ZU call Heat Beat – a nocturnal sex dream bringing together no wave, funk, house, techno, and global percussion.

With two albums, 2012’s ‘Life’ and 2016’s ‘Afterlife’, and a slew of other cassettes and twelve inch’s, the octet’s prolific diversity has garnered them praise from national and international publications who are taking notice.

Recorded at Oxford Art Factory (Volumes 2015), Sydney, 29th August 2015.

Starting off in Sydney, Step Panther have shredded their way across stages locally and internationally for the last 6 years. With their lo-fi rock n roll garage pop tunes you could easily mistake their sound for something made in a Detroit garage in the 1960’s. Their high energy rambunctious live shows have earned them slots on sxsw, and the great escape, as well as supporting international acts Yuck, Kurt Vile, and Girls. With two EPS, two albums and a third album on the way, Step Panther show no signs of slowing down.

Starting in 2006 with little more than a small keyboard she got given as a gift, Scraps has released numerous recordings in various formats and has lit dance floors not only in Australia, but around the world as well. She also crafts her own merch from t-shirts to tote bags

Recorded at The Brightside, Brisbane,  4th April 2014.

You might know Ela Stiles from some of the bands she’s played in over the last couple of years: Songs and Bushwalking. It was the band Songs which she began with Max Doyle that saw her focus shift from modelling to music. She’s been a member of Songs since 2007 and Bushwalking started as a psych three-piece that she originally formed to work on her solo songs. It turned out to be more of a band than a solo project and they released their second LP ‘No Enter’ in September 2013. In 2014, Ela released her debut self-titled solo record on Bedroom Suck Records which which displays her discovering her vocal talents through experimentation.

Yes, I’m Leaving
Recorded & Mixed by Branko Cosic.
Recorded at The Underdog Pub Co, Brisbane, 1st November 2014.

Last year Yes, I’m leaving released their fourth album, Slow Release, on Melbourne’s Homeless records and in doing so they join a cast of some of Australia’s finest gritty noisey rock bands. The Sydney three-piece are well known for their pulverising live shows, in fact their latest album was recorded at their rehearsal studio, and that’s usually a good indication of a band that take their live sound very seriously. You can’t mention Yes, I’m Leaving without mentioning the Albini influence that runs through not only their music but their entire approach to being a band.

Afenginn

Recorded at Woodford Folk Festival, Woodford, 27th December 2014 – 1st January 2015.

A profound fascination with the world’s many musical cultures and the desire to create their own version of world music have been the driving forces for Afenginn since their start in 2002. This band is by no means conventional. They are inquisitive, playful and have an imaginative and anarchistic take on traditional musical structures.

Paper Lions are an indie rock band from Belfast, PEI whose music shines with sunny melodies and tales of lost youth. Ep 127: Sex On Toast; The Eagle Junction

Sex On Toast
Recorded & Mixed by John Robinson
Recorded at Woodford Folk Festival, 27th December, 2014.

Sex On Toast are a funked up lot, specialising in overblown choreography and onstage antics, these new-jack swingers feel ripped straight from another era. Last month saw the release of their brand new single, “Oh Loretta”, a throwback track that could have been recorded in the 70’s, but is nevertheless yesterday fresh.

Equal parts righteous and ridiculous, Sex On Toast are known for their raucous and engaging live shows. These Festival regulars, have performed on numerous stages across Australia, from Melbourne International Jazz Festival and Adelaide Fringe, to Apollo Bay Music Festival and Woodford Folk where this set was recorded. Live from the Bazaar stage and running through the new year, this is Sex On Toast.

Episode 125: BigStrongBrute; Caitlin Park

Wedding Pages cover image

BigStrongBrute
Recorded & Mixed by Branko Cosic.
Recorded at The Triffid on the 10th of April, 2015.

First up, we have a band with an incredibly huge name, but an incredibly svelte physical figure.
The group we’re talking about is BigStrongBrute, the moniker adopted by sole songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Paul Donoughue. Starting out as a solo outlet, has morphed into a multi-headed live show, at times as many as 8 people strong creating a wall of folk melody. His 2010 EP release ‘We Can Sleep Under Trees In The Morning’ got many ears paying attention. Bigstrongbrute’s debut album, 2012’s ‘Avalanche Of Truth’, really got people excited, as it displayed the many different flavours of this talented individual. July sees the release of his latest EP ‘Good Work’, which many of the songs in this set you’re about to hear appear on.

Recorded at The Standard on the 12th of February, 2014.

Caitlin Park writes and performs folktronica, taking folk and electro-acoustics to new heights with her abstract composition, sampling and film nostalgia. Releasing her debut album in 2011, MILK ANNUAL is a sprawling, intricate and heart-warming foray into the soundscapes of old films, audio books, spoken word, and minimalistic musical arrangement.
For much of 2012, Caitlin travelled to New York and London, and collected sounds which would appear on her critically lauded 2nd album, 2013’s The Sleeper, which was shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize.

Episode 124: Total Control; Dead Farmers

totalcontrol1

Total Control
Recorded by Ben Moore.
Mixed by Harvey O’Sullivan
Mastered by Mikey Young
Recorded at The Standard in Sydney on the 5th of February, 2014.

Total Control are a post-punk/electronic quintet, and have been active since 2008. On record, namely 2011’s ‘Henge Beat’ and 2014’s ‘Typical System’, their electronic sound is much more obvious, whereas their live presence is stripped of devices and become a raw punk band with urgency in their vains. Devo & Orchestral Manoeuvers In The Dark have been mentioned as influences, and while that’s definitely on show, there’s also a heavy debt to the psych/krautrock sounds of the 70’s.

Many thanks to Harvey O’Sullivan from FBi Radio’s Live Feed for his assistance.

Dead Farmers
Recorded & Mixed by Branko Cosic .
Recorded at the Greenslopes Bowls Club on the 14th of March, 2015.

Hailing from Sydney, garage-punkers Dead Farmers sprouted up through the cracks of Australia’s largest city’s underbelly and began rocking audiences in the mid-2000’s. Very reminiscent of the Detroit rock scene that produced bands such as The Stooges and MC5, they self-recorded their latest album ‘Wasteland’ straight onto half-inch tape free of reverb and post-recording effects, and sent it off to mastering to be improved upon.
