Episode 90: Dud Pills; Scrabbled

Dud Pills
Recorded by Patrick Lockwood.
Mixed by Patrick Lockwood.
Recorded at The Metro, Adelaide. 24 November 2013.

Did you know that some of the fellas from Bitch Prefect were all in a short-lived band called Dud Pills? Pat Telfer, Liam Kenny and their mate Pete who allegedly punched a guy so hard that a tooth got embedded in his fist. Dud Pills share a lot of similarities with the lo-fi pop of the aforementioned Bitch Prefect as well as some psych tendencies that Pat lashes out these days in his own band, ‘Old Mate’. They only ever had two releases a CD-R on Dirty Burger Records and a cassette titled ‘Sexy As Hell’ that released on Stacey Wilson’s (Terrible Truths, Rites Wild) old label ‘Faux Friends’. In November 2013, 3 years after that cassette, they reunited for a show at The Metro in Adelaide where they premiered one whole new song.

– Listen/buy to Old Mate’s ‘It Is What It Is’ on the SDZ records Bandcamp.

– Listen/pre-order to Liam Kenny’s cover of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Avalanche’ from ‘A Kenny For Your Thoughts, out in November on It Records on soundcloud.

Scrabbled
Recorded by Steve Palmer.
Mixed by Josh Watson.
Recorded at The Beetle Bar, Brisbane. 12 September 2014.

Clag vocalist Bek Moore formed Scrabbled with Extrafoxx main-guy Conwae Burrell and the group rapidly ballooned in membership not long after formation. Conwae has since moved on from the group but Dag front-man Dusty has taken on the male response vocals and rhythm guitar duties. These days there are anywhere between 6 to 9 members on stage at once playing guitars, double basses, self-made instruments, violins, synths etc. The group is a veritable who’s who of the Brisbane underground music scene (better known as The Real Bad Music Scene) and has included: Jason Bright (Dragster), Mark Spinks (Gravel Samwidge), Emily Wade, Max Fowler-Roy, Tim Green, Michael Bouwman, Sandra Selig (Primitive Motion), Marissa Allen (Bremen Town Musician), Glen Schenau (Per Purpose), Heidi Cutlack (Bent), Chris Nylstoch, Adam Sussman (X-Wave), Matt Earle (xNoBBQx), Nicola Morton (Club Sound Witches) and Skye McNicol (Wardenburger). The collective produce a pastiche of strange sounds tugging at the limits of sensible music, which goes hand in hand with their anti-establishment agenda and detest for Queensland’s conservative LNP majority. Scrabbled are one of the most visibly political indie-rock bands in Australia right now.

– Listen/buy to Scrabbled’s ‘Welcome To Pig City’ over at the Virtual Cool Bandcamp.

Episode 29: Amateur Childbirth; Bitch Prefect

amateurchildbirthmoneyshot

Episode 29 of Live Delay takes a slight change of pace from recent episodes. We catch a live set with Brisbane artist Amateur Childbirth as well as revist a great performance by pop band Bitch Prefect.

AMATEUR CHILDBIRTH
Recorded by Will Clarke.
Mixed by Dusty Anastassiou.
Recorded at The Tribal Theatre, Brisbane in May 2013.

Amateur Childbirth is the stage name of Brisbane artist Ivan Matthew. Influenced by the work of Henry Miller, he’s an artist unafraid to delve into uncomfortable subject, illuminating everyday events with a cynical but earnest take on modern society – done all with just an acoustic guitar.

Live Delay were fortunate to be present to record Amateur Childbirth when he took the stage at Tribal Theatre back in May 2013 as part of the Guilt Retreat – a multi-disciplinary visual and musical arts series. Tune in to hear some honest live music.

Feature interview: Ivan Matthew of Amateur Childbirth.

BITCH PREFECT
Recorded by Andrew McLellan.
Mixed by Harry Byrne.
Recorded at the Black Bear Lodge, Brisbane in August 2012.

Bitch Prefect are Pat Telfer, Scott O’Hara and Liam Kenny and once upon a time emerged from a sharehouse in Adelaide, but, like so many other bands do, moved to Melbourne a few years back. In 2012 they put out their debut record via bedroom suck by the name of ‘Big Time’, a well-received release that featured the deliciously depressing but wholly relatable single ‘Bad Decisions’. The band managed to make it up to Brisbane in August 2012 during the launch tour for Big Time and played 4ZZZ’s GET HAPPIER festival and we were fortunate enough to be present to get a recording.

Exciting times are afoot in the Live Delay office. Well, it’s not really an office, more like a self-made hovel underneath a bridge outside Brisbane, but I can get free wifi. Anywhoo – yes, exciting times. Episode 21 is upon us and we’re about to get busy with some podcasting action! The details will be made public very soon (so, wathc this space).

To celebrate the above fact, we thought we’d bring you some of the best live delay tracks from across the first twenty episodes. All of these have been recorded, mixed and produced by community radio volunteers and I’m might impressed by the results.

In the bracket of songs you will hear tonight, you’ll get live tuned from HARMONY, HOLY BALM, KEEP ON DANCINS, BITCH PREFECT and many more.

The show goes out via Zed Digital tonight at 8pm, as well sa the Community Radio Network. It will be also available in podcast format early next week.

Get busy with Live Delay.

Episode 10! Who would have thunk it? To celebrate, we have two great sets for you to sink your teeth into. First we take a visit to the south of the nation, celebrating the jangle pop of BITCH PREFECT. We then follow it up with a vicious forehand from Brisbane psych band DREAMTIME. Tune in, because these are great! That’s a good enough reason, yeah?

BITCH PREFECT
Recorded by Andrew McLellan and mixed by Harry Byrne.
Recorded at The Black Bear Lodge, Fortitude Valley.

Bitch Prefect are Pat Telfer, Scott O’Hara and Liam Kenny and once upon a time emerged from a sharehouse in Adelaide, but, like so many other bands do, moved to Melbourne a few years back. In 2012 they put out their debut record via bedroom suck by the name of ‘Big Time’, a well received release that featured the deliciously depressing but wholly relatable single ‘Bad Decisions’. DREAMTIME
Recorded and mixed by Sky Kirkham
Recorded at The Primitive Room, Spring Hill.

Dreamtime have been kicking around Brisbane for a few years now, putting out a well received self titled LP in late 2011, and following it up with the sprawling noise of SUN in late 2012 – a great sophomore record filled with distant soundscapes, wailing guitars and percussive elements that herald an imminent storm. Counting groups like The Cosmic Dead, Six Organs of Admittance, and the Psychic Ills among their influences, Dreamtime have caught the attentions of fans near and far, and are heading to the Austin Psych fest in Texas in April 2013. This recording made by Sky Kirkham for Live Delay comes from their set at 2012’s ROCK TO TRANSMIT at the Primitive Room in Spring Hill, Brisbane.
