Some are already calling 2014 ‘the year of Blank Realm’ and why not? They’ve received glowingly positive reviews for their new record, Grassed Inn, from the likes of Pitchfork; Mojo; The Wire and The Guardian.

The Brisbane quartet are taking their psychedelic slacker-rock worldwide and all good plans have to start somewhere so they started last week at The Underdog in Brisbane. The live recording team were there for an album launch full of drunken revelry, a celebration of all things realm. The crowd were dancing all around the racket, at one point one lucky punter found themselves clinging to the lighting rig for dear life.

Supports on the night were local garage-pop brats Thigh Master, frown-rockers Sewers, Sydney’s electro/experimental heroine Lucy Cliché and living-room rave band Four Door.

Episode 23: Holy Balm; Four Door

In episode 23 of Live Delay, we get busy with Sydney and bring you tro great sets from HOLY BALM and FOUR DOOR.

HOLY BALM
Recorded and mixed by Andrew McLellan, 2012
Recorded at The Black Bear Lodge, Brisbane, August 2012

Psychedelic electric jams, punctuated by drum machines, acoustic percussion and waves of synth, Sydney’s Holy Balm bring their minimalist dance music to the Live Delay stage, ripping it up in front of a packed house at 4ZZZ’s Get Happier Fest back in August 2012.

Find out more about Holy Balm.

FOUR DOOR
Recorded and mixed by Andrew McLellan
Recorded at the Lost Race Festival, Cooparoo Bowls Club, November 2012

Four Door describe themselves in four words – techno, synths, creeps, bleeps. And I guess that’s a very accurate although simplistic description of the group’s housey weirdness.

Four Door are actually Jonathan Hochman and Matthew Hopkins, two dudes from Sydney who are fond of things electronic. You might recognise Hochman from his duties with Sydney trio, Holy Balm, whereas Hopkins plays in Naked On The Vague.

Four Door have played with the likes of Blank Realm, The Garbage and The Flowers and New War, but came up to Brisbane in October last year to play the Lost Race Festival at the Cooparoo Bowls Club in the city’s inner south.

Episode 12: Four Door; Martyr Privates

Four Door

Four Door

Why hello there! We’re up to episode twelve of Australia’s best live music show – Live Delay. Did you know that the only way on can make a good day better is via live music? A doctor told me that once.

This episode has some great performances contained within. First up is an extended set of bleeps and creeps from Sydney’s FOUR DOOR. And just when you thought it could get any better, we sneak in a song or two from Brisbane’s MARTYR PRIVATES. Outrageous value.

MARTYR PRIVATES
Recorded and mixed by Sky Kirkham
Recorded at the Happy Fest, March 2012

Martyr Privates is fronted by Cameron Hawes, who people may also know from I Heart Hiroshima. The band also features Ashleigh Shipton on bass and Sam Dixon on drums, and they’re renowned around town for the fondness of noise and repetition. Is it dirge-rock? Who knows? This set comes from 4ZZZ’s Happy Fest back in March 2012.
