Episode 38: Raw Prawn; Useless Children

raw-prawn-2We’ve got some doses of weird punk and earth shattering noise rock on the latest episode of Live Delay. Our feature set comes from Sydney kids RAW PRAWN while we’ve also dug into the archive to bring you the doom-laced noise of Melbourne’s USELESS CHILDREN.

Recorded by Murray Paas
Mixed by Dusty Anastassiou.
Recorded at The Zoo, July 2013.

I guess you’d call them a Sydney super group? Raw Prawn combine members from Holy Balm, Whores and Camperdown and Outs into one magnificent punk rock beast. They call themselves weird punk (so I believe) but it’s guitar music laced with urban depression and everyday minutiae. There’s some understated pop hooks lurking beneath these tunes as well. This set comes the band’s 2013 performance at 4ZZZ Happy Fest back in July 2013 and showcases the band’s excellent set of live chops.

Recorded by Andrew McLellan and Darragh Murray.

Recorded at The Waiting Room, Brisbane, September 2012.

Melbourne’s Useless Children are LOUD. Extremely loud. And last year the visited Brisbane to launch their excellent second full length record, Post Ending/Pre Completion.

A three piece made up of drummer and vocalist Cinta Master, guitarist and vocalist Rob Bonnett and bassist Steve Patrick, the trio are an unrelenting force, emerging from their punk rooms to add in brutish noise dynamics and other sound experiments.

Episode 28: God Bows To Math; Old Growth Cola

In the latest – and greatest – episode of Live Delay, we jump across the pond to check in with New Zealand noise titans, GOD BOWS TO MATH. We also replay an excellent live set from Brisbane ‘strange’ pop band, OLD GROWTH COLA.

Recorded and mixed by Josh Watson.
Recorded at The Waiting Room, Brisbane.

Taking their name from a song by The Minutemen, Auckland’s God Bows To Math are fairly regular visitors to Australian shores. Proudly DIY, the New Zealand trio have performed their unique noise adventures at over 100 performances during their four year career. Their self-titled debut hits shelves in 2011 and they’ve recently released a new 7inch single in the lead up to their forthcoming sophomore record. This performance from The Waiting Room in Brisbane back in April 2013 shows every angle of this exciting – and noisy – rock band.

Feature interview: Martin Phillips from God Bows To Math.

Recorded by Sky Kirkham.
Mixed by Henry Mills.

Allegedly Brisbane’s ‘strangest’ pop group, Old Growth Cola are a fascinating and not always predictable band who like to indulge in layer weird sounds over traditional pop melodies. It’s a recipe for fascination and Live Delay managed to catch them in their element at the 4ZZZ BaZZar in West End in mid-2012.

Episode 22: Mere Women; Dreamtime

Mere Women

Mere Women

Two sets this week! First up is Sydney trio post-punk trio Mere Women followed by a visit to the pysch stables of Dreamtime.

Recorded and produced by FBi Radio, Sydney.
Graciously shared with Live Delay.

Mere Women are Katrina Byrne, Amy Wilson and Flyn McKinnirery, a talented trio from Marrickville, Sydney. They’ve been kicking aorund the scene for a few years now and brought out the well received OLD LIFE in mid-2012 – a noisy, laconic adventures of post-punk with some gothic undertones thrown in for good measure. They’ve got an interesting sound and make for an excellent live group and you should definitely tune in to check out this set from their 2012 Old Life record launch in Sydney. Our good friends FBi radio were on hand to capture the set and it’s via them that we can bring it to your eardrums!

Recorded at The Primitive Room, Spring Hill.

Dreamtime have been kicking around Brisbane for a few years now, putting out a well received self titled LP in late 2011, and following it up with the sprawling noise of SUN in late 2012 – a great sophomore record filled with distant soundscapes, wailing guitars and percussive elements that herald an imminent storm. Counting groups like The Cosmic Dead, Six Organs of Admittance, and the Psychic Ills among their influences, Dreamtime have caught the attentions of fans near and far and were invited to play Austin Psych fest in Texas in April 2013. This recording made by Sky Kirkham for Live Delay comes from their set at 2012’s ROCK TO TRANSMIT at the Primitive Room in Spring Hill, Brisbane.
