Based in Melbourne, Astral Skulls in the moniker of Kurt Eckhardt, who started the project in 2014. Fusing krautrock beats with scratchy guitars and synth pop stabs, the theme throughout the music is space. After releasing singles digitally and on vinyl through his own record label Psychic Hysteria, Astral Skulls released their debut album in October 2015 and is named after the first words spoken during the first steps on the moon by humankind, Contact:Light.

Kalindy Williams joins Kurt for the live version of the band and this particular set features a rather interesting cover that you won’t hear anywhere else.

Recorded and Mixed by Ben Rivers & Josh Dowton
Recorded at Black Wire Records, Sydney, 30th October, 2016.

Consisting of members Marnie Elizabeth Vaughn on the drums and Nathan James Martin on baritone guitar, Hannahband self-describe themselves as “Emo punx”, and have been clawing up the ranks of music blog hype lists every time they play a show, regardless of location. They have three full-length albums under their belts, with their 2016 record ‘Quitting Will Improve Your Health’ displaying how loud they can get when firing on all cylinders. Although this set displays a different side of the band, turning down their instruments to display the softer side of their sound.

Recorded at Black Wire Records, Sydney, 11th December, 2016.

Whilst working on their third album, which should be out sometime during 2017, Mere Women premiered two tracks from their upcoming record in this session recorded at Black Wire Records in Sydney. Their previously released albums; 2012’s Old Life and 2014’s Your Town, received unanimous praise from national press outlets, commenting on their great blend of reverb-drenched guitars, echoed calls, slamming drums and now solid low-end.

Recorded at Brighton Up Bar (Volumes 2015), Sydney, 29th August 2015.

Starting off in 2011 Mere Women create a dark, and dreamy style of tunes best described as post punk goth pop. Wasting no time in sharing their gloomy tunes with the world they have released two full albums with the legendary label Poison City Records, the latter of which was recorded in an ill lit moderately repurposed cold storage unit that helps truly capture the vibe they are dishing out.

Recorded at Oxford Arts Factory (Volumes 2015), Sydney, 29th August 2015.

Made up of three siblings and a spiritual brother Blank Realm have been kicking around since 2008. Starting off as an improvised noise group, they band have truly refined their sound over their 8-year life span into a careful concoction of erratic noise and unforgettable hooks.  Much like their albums, their live shows have a continually growing reputation for being utter chaos and strangely mesmerising at the same time. Unafraid to throw in a curve ball and hit a few strange notes, Blank Realm will always keep you guessing.

Live Delay is proud to have finally procured a quality live recording of Brisbane force of nature, Per Purpose. The four (sometimes five) piece have been tearing at eardrums for a few years now and are on the precipice of releasing their debut long player – one that will be something to be reckoned with indeed if this live set is anything to go by.

Composed of Glen Schenau, Mitchell Perkins, Harry Byrne, Joe Alexander and occasionally Josh Watson, this recording comes from their blistering support set when compatriots Beaches visited the Black Bear Lodge in Brisbane. With some overlap with early Drones material, Per Purpose have purpose and this is one of the best sets you’re likely to here on Live Delay this year.

DREAMTIME

Recorded at The Primitive Room, Spring Hill.

Dreamtime have been kicking around Brisbane for a few years now, putting out a well received self titled LP in late 2011, and following it up with the sprawling noise of SUN in late 2012 – a great sophomore record filled with distant soundscapes, wailing guitars and percussive elements that herald an imminent storm. Counting groups like The Cosmic Dead, Six Organs of Admittance, and the Psychic Ills among their influences, Dreamtime have caught the attentions of fans near and far and were invited to play Austin Psych fest in Texas in April 2013. This recording made by Sky Kirkham for Live Delay comes from their set at 2012’s ROCK TO TRANSMIT at the Primitive Room in Spring Hill, Brisbane.
