EP 181: Grieg; Eat Laser Scumbag!

Grieg

grieg

Recorded by Reuben Aptroot
Mixed by Branko Cosic
Recorded at Crowbar, Brisbane 10th of June 2016.

Featuring members from almost every prominent Brisbane punk band through the 2000’s, Grieg features Alex Gillies; member of No Anchor and A Savage God on drums, Tamara Dawn from Hits and Gazoonga Attack on Bass, John Mercer from Undead Apes and Dick Nasty on guitar, and Lance Sinclair on vocals. Together they bring big noise, big riffs, and a heaviness that could only be achieved by a band comprised of this many stellar Brisbane artists. They have released one album so far, titled ‘Retaliate First’, and is available digitally or on vinyl through their Bandcamp page.

Recorded at Sonic Masala Festival, Brisbane, 13th of August 2016.

Kicking it around Brisbane since the early 2000’s, Eat Laser Scumbag! released their first EP in 2005 and have been sparingly playing their brand of punk rock all over the place since. Like most Brisbane bands, Eat Laser Scumbag! is made up of members who all play in another band. In this case, the two guitarists Ashley Timms and Nathan Gygar play in Nova Scotia, bassist Adam Scott plays in Undead Apes (who we have previously featured in Episode 178), and finally Xavier Poropat on drums from Eyes Ninety (who we also previously featured in Episode 180). Their latest EP ‘Chakras Aligned’ was released in September 2014 and is available online through their Bandcamp. This set you are about to hear is their first show on Australian soil in four years.

Recorded at The Waiting Room, May 31 2013.

Brisbane drone / black metal inspired group O. Simply, O. They merge slow dank bass synth processions with disorderly melodic guitar in a way that makes me wish that DJ Screw lived long enough to get into metal. O have spent the better part of a year working on a 12” record in between life, jobs and other bands. It’s not out yet but will

Recorded at The Waiting Room, May 31 2013.

Every bit as heavy as the other two bands on the bill that night, Vassals present more of a death metal inspired sound. Detuned guitars, heavy riffs and V8 bass underpinned by jazzy drum work. They sound tight and focused, like they’ve really put in the hard yards. The band aren’t active anymore but members have gone on to play in other bands like Inside The Whale, Hope Drone, Marathon and Low Season.

Prepare thy ears! Today’s we’ve got an earth shattering episode of Live Delay, with a serve of hard rock trio No Anchor for your pleasure.

NO ANCHOR
Recorded by Darragh Murray (with some help from Cameron Smith).
Mixed by Cameron Smith.
Recorded at The Waiting Room, May 2013.

One wonders if Ian Rogers, Alex Gillies and Donavan Miller – the guitar-less godhead of Brisbane three-piece No Anchor – have been in cahoots with local ENT doctors for the past few years. How many eardrums have been perforated with all that doomish bass insanity?

Taking their cues from the likes of The Jesus Lizard, Boris, Melvins and half a dozen sludgy-infested rock groups from the 1980s onwards, No Anchor have slowly but surely built up a cult-like following throughout the antipodes, culminating in 2013’s excellent record, The Golden Bridge.

In this episode of Live Delay, we bring you the group’s pummelling performance from The Waiting Room in Brisbane, May 2013 where they played alongside O and Vassals. Horns up.
