She released her debut album ‘You Can Have It All’ in 2013 and followed it up with the ‘Time Rolls By’ EP in 2015 and ‘Hello Friends’ EP in 2016, which were all released through the Sydney-based label Rice Is Nice Records.

EP 170: Summer Flake; Loose Tooth

Summer Flake

Recorded at PBS FM Studios, Melbourne, 12th April 2016.

Summer Flake is the lush, harmony-laden solo project of Stephanie Crase, whose DNA runs through the best Adelaide indie pop of the last ten years – from No Through Road and Birth Glow, through to Hit The Jackpot and Batrider.

She released her debut album ‘You Can Have It All’ through Rice Is Nice Records in 2013 with her richly layered pop arrangements on display, shot through with perfectly measured hooks, crunchy fuzz guitar and ethereal vocals. That was followed up by 2015’s ‘Time Rolls By’ EP and her second album ‘Hello Friends’ dropped in early 2016 with local and overseas press unanimously praising the the spaghetti fuzz-infused guitar twangs and soft harmonies that detail the small complexities of everyday life.

Loose Tooth

Recorded at PBS FM Studios, Melbourne, 8th March 2016.

Swept together from the ashes of your finest night on the tiles, Loose Tooth are a Melbourne three-piece who craft sweet guitar pop with frayed edges and swollen hearts.

Life-long mates Etta Curry and Nellie Jackson met in day care when they were young and spent nap times dreaming of creating a heavenly racket. Long-time friend Luc Dawson was drafted in on bass to transform their sketches into the sort of songs that stick in your head for days. Their debut LP ‘Saturn Returns’ was released through Milk! Records in April 2016, and is filled with smoldering pop gems that are drenched in reverb and deliver heartfelt assessments through misty eyes.

Whether spluttering to life on an empty tank or hitting harmonies in full flight, seeing LOOSE TOOTH really is a beautiful thing.

Episode 63: Summer Flake; Gravel Samwidge

Summer Flake

Recorded at The The Hideaway, Mar 15 2014.

Stephanie Crase is an Adelaide native who has been performing under the moniker ‘Summer Flake’ since 2012. Steph has been a member of New Zealand rock band Batrider as well as Adelaide bands Hit the Jackpot! and No Through Road. She still finds time to write, record and perform with Fair Maiden (they have a debut LP coming out in June) a band she formed with Ellen Carey back in 2007. The music of Summer Flake – like a snow flake or a Cadbury flake – is a delicate thing. Musically, there’s a lot of passion in Steph’s guitar playing; it rises and falls, ebbs and flows. Her voice works in much the same way, wholly dynamic and enchanting, it hurts when those heart-wretched syllables are prolonged into anguish or contemplation.

Gravel Samwidge formed in the late 80s but they’re still kicking around with some new blood. Mark Spinks has kept the name all these years and the band even won a Triple J Unearthed competition in the early 90s. Nowadays, Ash Jenkins and Alex “Sleepy” Morrison fill out bass and drum duties respectively. Sometimes even Matt Kennedy of Kitchen’s Floor-fame guests on lead guitar. Not this time though, it’s just Gravel Samwidge in the classic rock power-trio formation.

The group had a busy 2013, releasing two EPs and a mini-LP while playing regularly in Brisbane as well as Melbourne. Their latest release is a 12” on Swashbuckling Hobo, a rock ‘n’ roll label from Brisbane.
