Emerging out of Wollongong (aka The Coal Coast) in 2013, Solid Effort have been working up the ranks ever since with their self-branded style of music they like to call “leisure punk”. They released their debut EP ‘Ballad of Bulli’ in 2015 and are working on their first album, which is expected to drop sometime in 2017. Extensive touring, with support slots for The Courtneys, Gooch Palms and Hockey Dad (just to name a few), have helped build a solid following for these guys. This 5-piece unit are living up to their namesake, with every track dropped a true ‘solid effort’.

Hownowmer are a 3 piece hard rock band from Melbourne, and have been shredding up the scene since late 2015. Their brooding brand of building rock packs a punch, and frontman Ben Salter delivers with hard hitting vocals and sultry guitar riffs. Salter is also known from many previous works, such as Giants Of Science, The Gin Club, The Wilson Pickers, The Young Liberals and his own solo records. Jacqueline Dortmans (bass) and Harley McLeod (drums) make up parts two and three of this powerhouse unit.

Darts

Darts formed around 2008, initially just as a two-piece — Angus Ayres and his brother Andrew — in the Victorian city of Bendigo. They ballooned out to a five-piece in the early 2010’s, adding Ally Campbell-Smith, Paige X. Cho and Jessie Fernandez to fold. They have a melancholic, aggressive sound that feature loud-quiet dynamics that exhibit their unique tapestry of influences. One listen will induce flashbacks to early Modest Mouse, Pixies, The Breeders and Dinosaur Jr, all wrapped up in one frenetic punch that’s impossible to listen to without being totally absorbed.

In 2015, Darts started to gain a wider audience when they released their album ‘Below Empty & Westward Bound’ on Rice Is Nice Records.

Consisting of members Marnie Elizabeth Vaughn on the drums and Nathan James Martin on baritone guitar, Hannahband self-describe themselves as “Emo punx”, and have been clawing up the ranks of music blog hype lists every time they play a show, regardless of location. They have three full-length albums under their belts, with their 2016 record ‘Quitting Will Improve Your Health’ displaying how loud they can get when firing on all cylinders. Although this set displays a different side of the band, turning down their instruments to display the softer side of their sound.

Starting up in the tail end of the noughties in Brisbane, Sleepwalks is a unity between three friends, David Hansford, Kevin Fincham and Damien Masters, and their love for loud yet simply structured music, known to some as the ‘Grunge’ genre. They released their first record ‘The Milk Has Gone Sour’ in 2011 though Z-Man Records and it encapsulated their holiday to Chicago to record with Steve Albini, whose name you’ll see in the liner notes of records belonging to Shellac, Big Black, Pixies, Breeders, PJ Harvey and little known band called Nirvana.
They started writing and recording their follow-up album in 2012, but it wasn’t until 2016 until they finished and released it to the world and titled it ‘Kingdom’.
Their performances are rare to come by, so it was a treasure to capture this band picking up their instruments again and breathing new life into the raw materials.

You Beauty! is not only a term you’ll hear yelled at an Australian sporting event that involves an oval-shaped ball, but is also the name of a four-piece band based in Sydney, who take their ockerisms and wear them on their sleeve. In 2014, they released their ‘pub-rock opera’ titled Jersey Flegg, which tells the tale of love and loss during the 1998 NRL season. Fast-forward to late 2015 and You Beauty have shifted their focus of love to online adventures on their second album ‘Illywacka’, which came out through Rice Is Nice Records.

In 2012, Ultra Material was born from two couples who had shared stages with their respective husband-wife Brisbane bands, Matt & Sarah Deasy from ‘Do The Robot’ and Nick Skepper & Zuzana Kovar from Sunshine State. The two duos combined their instruments and started to make their own blend of dreamgaze with swirling key lines, effected guitar delays and soaring vocals backed by breakbeat-esque rhythms.

In the last year, they’ve released a self-titled EP cassette and their debut album ‘Double Date’ on Sydney’s Blackwire Records label, which has had tastemakers salivating for more.

When you mash together the sounds of The Cure, The Go-Betweens, The Velvet Underground and The Triffids, you get Sydney’s Big White, who weave all of those influences into their own strain of jangle pop. Within the span of two years, they’ve packed their sounds into a suitcase and travelled to the US and Europe, playing to swelling crowds, all while they were still writing songs for their first album, Teenage Dreams, which was eventually released in April 2016 on Caroline Records in Australia and Burger Records in the US.

Starting off in 2011 Mere Women create a dark, and dreamy style of tunes best described as post punk goth pop. Wasting no time in sharing their gloomy tunes with the world they have released two full albums with the legendary label Poison City Records, the latter of which was recorded in an ill lit moderately repurposed cold storage unit that helps truly capture the vibe they are dishing out.

Made up of three siblings and a spiritual brother Blank Realm have been kicking around since 2008. Starting off as an improvised noise group, they band have truly refined their sound over their 8-year life span into a careful concoction of erratic noise and unforgettable hooks.  Much like their albums, their live shows have a continually growing reputation for being utter chaos and strangely mesmerising at the same time. Unafraid to throw in a curve ball and hit a few strange notes, Blank Realm will always keep you guessing.

Starting off in Sydney, Step Panther have shredded their way across stages locally and internationally for the last 6 years. With their lo-fi rock n roll garage pop tunes you could easily mistake their sound for something made in a Detroit garage in the 1960’s. Their high energy rambunctious live shows have earned them slots on sxsw, and the great escape, as well as supporting international acts Yuck, Kurt Vile, and Girls. With two EPS, two albums and a third album on the way, Step Panther show no signs of slowing down.
