Episode 95: Police Force; Clare Quinn

Recorded at The Underdog, Brisbane. 15 August 2014.

With a name as hot as the beat in Queensland, Police Force combine thick tropical rhythms with blistering guitar damage. Comprising of members from Cobwebbs and Woodboot, they’ve kicked off their garage boots and flung themselves face first into a haze of glory.

The trio promise a forthcoming cassette release, but until then you can hear their first release, Outer Limits Pt. 1, on Bandcamp.

Clare Quinn, a songstress originally hailing from Gympie and now based in Brisbane, sings on the conditions of the human heart: love, life, loss and learning. Channelling Celtic and folk rhythms and combining them with an indie-folk sensibility, Clare’s music is unassuming yet filled with memorable melodies. Her songs are underpinned with a lackadaisical charm, and suited to quiet hours with warm company.

Episode 65: Gooch Palms; Woodboot

Gooch Palms

Recorded at The Underdog, Mar 22 2014.

Gooch Palms are a band from Newcastle and they’re very proud about it, I think. Its hard to tell because these guys have such a wonderful self-deprecating sense of humour. You know the type of person that’s impossible to embarrass? That’s Gooch Palms. They’re probably one of the few bands around these days to warrant an R18+ rating, or to even live up to the claims in their press-releases. When you’re nervous about going on stage someone will usually give you that timeless piece of advice, “Just imagine everybody in their underwear.” Leroy turns that old chestnut on its head and plays with no pants. He stands there in front of an audience of close to 100, wearing nothing but a lycra top, like G.G. Allin without the ‘first 3 rows will get wet’ warning.

If you listen closely you can hear the moment Leroy takes off his G-string.

Woodboot is perhaps the most in your face obnoxious band in Australia right now. Guerrilla-style facebook marketing has created an astonishing amount of buzz around this new Brisbane band and they boast members of Velociraptor, Occults and the Lovely Legs. The drummer role is a revolving door that has seen both Sam Wightman (Cobwebbs) and Donovan Miller (Roku Music) pick up the sicks. They keep things unpredictable, constantly blurring the lines between music and art – at one show they had a member of Yoghurt Blood eat a steak live on stage. Woodboot are so full-on that it would feel wrong to just call them a side-project.

They shout a lot.
