Clowns have been on a steady rise since releasing their debut album “I’m Not Right” in 2013 via Poison City Records. The Melbourne 4-piece followed it up in 2015 with their second record “Bad Blood”. This took them to international stages across Europe as well as generating a bigger following back home, supporting the likes of Bodyjar, Frenzal Rhomb and Poison Idea. In 2017, Clowns released their third record “Lucid Again” to critical acclaim, with the addition of Brisbane’s own Hanny-J on bass guitar and playing sold out dates across the country.

Ep 221: Even

Even

Forming in Melbourne in 1994, Even was formed by high school friends Ash Naylor and Matthew Cotter, and were joined by Roderick “Wally” Kempton from The Meanies on Bass. Even’s sound is attributed to Naylor’s love of guitar pop music of the 1960’s and 1970’s and introduced themselves to the world with 2 EP releases in 1995, ‘In Stereo’ and ‘Ten to Forty-Six’ through Rubber Records.

1996 saw the release of their debut album, ‘Less Is More’, which was recorded by Greg Wales and mixed by Wales and esteemed UK-via-Australia producer Nick Launay. Australian musicologist, Ian McFarlane, said at the time that is was “one of the best Australian debut albums of 1996.” and was it was nominated at the 1997 ARIA awards for Best Independent Release.

They followed it up with 1998’s ‘Come Again’ which featured acclaimed American producer Tony Lash on the desk, and kicked off the millennium with their third album ‘A Different High’ in 2001, with ‘Free Kicks’ following in 2004, ‘Even’ in 2008 and ‘In Another Time’ in 2011.

On the 20th anniversary of ‘Less Is More’, Even decided to celebrate the occasion with a small run of dates on the East Coast and we were lucky enough to capture their show in Brisbane.

Ep 220: Red Riders

The two founding members of Red Riders, Alex Grigg and Adrian Deutsch, first met at a Black Rebel Motorcycle Club gig in 2002 and discovered a common interest in music. The band started playing house shows in 2003 and would spend 2004 moving up the ladder of the Sydney music scene with support slots with Jet, The Sleepy Jackson and Franz Ferdinand and the release of their self-titled debut EP  before the end of the year.

2005 turned into another busy year with the release of their second EP ‘The Plan A’ amongst more national touring and 2006 saw the release of their breakthrough debut album ‘Replica Replica’ on Ivy League Records. In 2008, Adrian Deutsch announced that he was leaving the band to concentrate on his solo career and was replaced by Brad Heald, who was also playing guitars in The Vines, their label mates at the time. Red Riders released their album, titled ‘Drown In Colour’ in 2009 and continued touring all the way through 2010, even hinting that they were demoing songs for a third album. In April 2011, the band made announcement that they were splitting up, with farewell shows to follow featuring Adrian Deutsch back on guitar and playing as a five-piece outfit.

In 2017, Red Riders announced that they were reuniting to support their long time friends Dappled Cities for a string of shows along the east coast. We were lucky enough to capture their Brisbane show during this run.

Summer Flake is the lush, harmony-laden solo project of Stephanie Crase, whose DNA runs through the best Adelaide indie pop of the last ten years – from No Through Road and Birth Glow, through to Hit The Jackpot and Batrider.

She released her debut album ‘You Can Have It All’ in 2013 and followed it up with the ‘Time Rolls By’ EP in 2015 and ‘Hello Friends’ EP in 2016, which were all released through the Sydney-based label Rice Is Nice Records.

California Girls

California Girls is a one-man operation driven by the one and only Gus McGrath and hails from the nation’s capital. Described as straight-up dance music, California Girls has two releases to its name, 2014’s ‘Age Of Consent’ EP and 2016’s ‘Desire’ album, which was put out through Canberra’s Moontown Records in a limited quantity and sold out immediately.

Ep 209: The Vines

The foundation of The Vines can be traced back to the southern suburbs of Sydney when Craig Nicholls met Patrick Matthews and David Olliffe in 1994 and started a band called Rishikesh. The name kept being misspelt wherever it was mentioned, so Craig suggested to change the name to ‘The Vines’ in honour of the band that his father played in back in the 60’s, also called The Vynes.

2001 would be the year that things started to fall into place for the band. Travelling to Los Angeles to record their debut album ‘Highly Evolved’, they had record labels climbing over each other to get the band’s signature. The album came out in July 2002 and music publications world wide were holding the band up as “the new saviours of rock”.

Their highly anticipated 2nd album came out in March 2004 under the title ‘Winning Days’ and had mixed reviews from critics and fans at the time.

After recording their first two albums in the USA, the band decided to record the next record in their hometown, which came out in 2006 under the title, Vision Valley. They went back to the States to record 2008’s Melodia and settled back in Australia for the recordings of Future Primitive and Wicked Nature.  2017 will see the release of their 7th record, titled ‘In Miracle Land’.

Lo-fi darlings Scott & Charlene’s Wedding, which is the brainchild of Craig Dermody, and has also featured members of Bushwalking, Peak Twins and Beaches during its existence.

The Neighbours-touting name aside, the music of Scott & Charlene’s Wedding was always an intrinsically Australian affair.

Their debut album Para Vista Social Club came out in 2010 and the album title is a reference to the Adelaide suburb Para Vista where frontman, songwriter and sole constant member Craig spent his youth.

2013 saw the release of their 2nd record ‘Any Port In A Storm’ through Fire Records in the UK and their third record ‘Mid Thirties Single Scene’ came out in late 2016 to rousing acclaim from critics.

Melbourne four-piece RVG write tightly wound heartbreakers who channel the post-punk and gothic rock of the late seventies. Fronted by vocalist and guitarist Romy Vager, the band is somewhere between the sounds of New Order, The Jam, and Siouxsie and the Banshees. Not even a year into their existence, they’ve released their debut LP ‘A Quality Of Mercy’ and their live shows are leaving audiences wanting more of their brand of goth-pop.
